BIOMOLECULES

· The chemical molecules present in the cell and which have a direct relationship with the activities of the cell are called Biochemical molecules or Biomolecules. · The collection of various types of molecules in a cell is termed a cellular pool. · A cellular pool consists of organic and inorganic compounds. · A cellular pool provides materials for the structure and functions of the cell. The constancy of the pool is maintained by the intake and elimination of specific molecules. (A) Organic compounds – Carbohydrates, Proteins, Lipids and Nucleic acids. (B) Inorganic compounds – Water, Minerals and Salts. Organic Compounds They are of two types: A. MICROMOLECULES · These are small and simple molecules with low molecular weight. · They have smaller molecular configurations and higher solubility.  E.g. Monosaccharides, Disaccharides, Unsaturated and Saturated fatty acids, Amino acids and Nucleotides. B. MACROMOLECULES · Large complex molecul...
